THE ULTIMATE COMPETITION

Candidates, issues and voting effectively

Politics is how groups of people make decisions.Every group has its own distinct culture, whether family, organization, business or government; each its own politics based on culture and values as well as individual egos and emotions. In a perfect world, agreements are reached based on what is best for the group. In today’s complex society there are many more factors and conflicts; all of which make sense to some, few to all.

Politicians

Most extreme is that of politics itself; among those who lead our government and how they are chosen. An arena of oversized egos where numerous forces are constantly in play; need for financial, political and voter support, with conflicts dominating an often muddled atmosphere. Duplicity and manipulation is the rule; not a profession for the faint of heart. Many have great difficulty maintaining a balance between being a good person and a being a successful politician; integrity vs. ambition. To some however, integrity is simply a vague concept masked by a facade of deceit.

Conflicts

Certainly, there are many fine people in politics but even the best must struggle at times with decisions involving conflicting issues or needs. And there are those who eagerly trade off the interests of their constituents for those of special interests. So how do we, the people, know who will actually prioritize the interests of those who elect them?

What can we do?

Of course, we must be sure to vote and encourage others. We must make our votes count for us by being aware; educate ourselves about issues and candidates. Surely, all candidates come across as our friends, talk about their accomplishments and what they will do for us. Dynamic speeches may be inspiring but what are they actually saying? How much is reality and what is simply illusion put forth to corral our votes?

Beware!

Beware the illusion! How much is real? Check the record. How have they voted on issues that affect us and our neighbors? Where is their funding coming from? What are the interest groups that might affect decisions? Are they telling the truth or what they want us to believe? Do they keep their word? The biggest question is often whether they will side with us or money.

Be diligent, dig deep

We must be diligent, observe and do the research, going beyond the media that all too often alters or omits information vital to our decisions. Emphasis must be focused on quality of life rather than sidetracked by emotional or cultural issues. Only as educated voters do we have a chance of electing candidates who actually place our true interests first. Only as educated voters can we make democracy work.

PATRONAGE: THE DARK SIDE

Root of power; means of control; widespread conflict of interest

In the Middle Ages, the feudal system dominated European society. A powerful lord doled out a parcel of land, including the serfs who worked it, to another nobleman in return for military support and other favors. This was patronage, favor for favor; eternally an element of human behavior; one that has always played a dominant role in politics and how people are governed.

Today’s nobility

Patronage has become significantly more sophisticated through the years. In America it dominates policy as today’s nobility; corporations and ultra rich; provide funding and favors for elected officials to bend their will, often selling out the needs of constituents and compromising the health of our planet.

National, state and local governments have specific industries dependent on support where huge sums are paid lobbyists to influence legislation advancing priorities of corporations or industries. On the federal level, energy companies’ profits take precedence over climate controls. Pharmaceuticals in America are allowed to charge the highest prices in the world. Health care overall has become a huge money maker, prioritizing profits over care. Other industries follow suit, taking advantage of our needs while frequently inflicting damage on our well being.

Big city political machines

In big cities, one party political machines impact lives from vital services to basic living conditions. Real estate developers are the powerful nobility here, along with health and other quality of life industries. The lords of big city politics have enormous power elections and spending. Jobs and funding are controlled on every level of city life.

Biggest city; biggest machine

New York, as America’s largest and wealthiest city, the nation’s financial capital, has a budget greater than those of many nations. How it is spent is influenced by the powerful lords of politics. These are the political bosses with large patronage networks who enable candidates’ futures and dole out jobs throughout their domains. Conflict of interest, regardless of law, is the rule.

In the 19th century, William M. “Boss” Tweed set the tone for political corruption, controlling spending, creating overruns for just about every city project. Benefits found their way into his pockets and those of his cronies. Although eventually his flagrant greed caught up with him and sent to prison, his legacy of political domination thrives to this day.

Like a huge pyramid, with those on top imposing patronage from individuals in their debt; each succeeding level, many with their own networks, it’s a massive conflict of interest with virtually dictatorial power over every function of the city. The will of those on top are imposed through several layers of bureaucracy, separating them from the dirty deeds; virtually immune from blame, which if any, punishes those at or near the bottom.

More money; louder voice

More money, greater power as the largest industries in the city today go largely unchecked. Zoning changes are passed almost at the will of the largest developers. Companies with huge resources dominate policy regardless of effect on citizens. Those on the outside lose out or become collateral damage.

Jobs and contracts for sale

Powerful political bosses hold financial life or death over those who rely on government jobs and contracts. Loyalty rather than ability is the road to success, controlling those from the top levels to the lowliest workers. Their rule is absolute as subordinates are often coerced into committing criminal acts; terrified as their livelihoods are held hostage.

This is today’s patronage. Political bosses have people in just about every city and state agency where debts are collected as favors; often brazenly illegal. Who is going to investigate?

Rising through the ranks in a city position can come at high cost. Many don’t realize that they are becoming tools while others willfully take the ride to better their positions.  In some city agencies, it is the rule for just about every employee. They may not even get it until they’re called upon to pay their debt.

Patronage controls our entire political system; who gets contracts, who gets jobs and who gets elected. The lords of politics manage it all. Only those on the very top levels of the economy can challenge their iron rule.

Operating behind a veil of democracy

For conflicts of interest involving workers or small businesses, there are often harsh penalties. Yet, it is the ongoing rule of politics. As far as society has progressed and technology advanced, we’re still living within a system where raw power commands control, hidden behind a veil of democracy.

VOTERS OR VICTIMS: POWER VS. DEMOCRACY

Who’s in control?

Democracy is a government elected by people but doesn’t define which people. In a perfect democracy, every citizen has an equal vote. The United Sates was the first in the modern world yet, to this day, this does not hold true.

We’ve come a long way since the beginning when states had absolute power over who  cast a ballot. At first it was only white males who owned property. But, despite enormous progress, there are still roadblocks.

We vote for candidates and on issues. Clouds of confusion however, too often blind us to the realities of situations and solutions.

We are victimized by those who prioritize money over welfare of people and planet. We are victimized by money poured into coffers of lobbyists who do their bidding. We are victimized by those who provide misinformation or withhold truth. We are victimized by those who manipulate our thoughts, playing on our emotions and lack of knowledge.

Foremost, we are victimized by our own trivialization of our precious right to vote and lack of effort to find the truths we need to make vital decisions. We are undermining the well being of ourselves, our families, our communities and our nation.

So many influences subvert the truth; so many interests prevent us from learning it. While money rules governments, emotions tend to rule people. Frustration and anger is the dominant mood in the world today, no more apparent than in America.

Spread of information/misinformation

As radio was entrenched in America and television growing rapidly as a force of communication, the FCC issued the Fairness Doctrine in 1949 to assure equal time to opposing opinions.  Congress made it official policy in 1954. The doctrine was abolished by the Reagan administration in 1987 after which talk radio spread rapidly with outright falsehoods posing as fact.

This played on ignorance and emotion with people believing whatever fed their frustration and anger. It’s confusion run amok, confirming the falsehoods, creating an exodus from reality and growing divisiveness among the population.

Carried over to the internet, spreading the wildest absurdities with no restraint. Without controls on content, outright lies simply become different opinions. And even the most reliable media will omit information essential to inform the public.

Divisiveness is now the rule!

…and money takes control more firmly than ever!!!

Emotion vs. reason

Do people really base their votes on facts and reason? Some, but too many base them on emotion and cultural biases even where actual facts are staring right at them. Susceptible to fabrication, we all become victims. In today’s America the less informed accept some of the most outrageous lies as distorted illusions become their reality.

And for those illusions, they vote and all suffer the consequences.

Until people are prepared with the knowledge and reason to choose wisely there can never be true democracy.

SOLUTIONS: THE POLITICS OF REASON

Opposed by forces of ignorance and greed

It would be negligent not to mention some of the obvious solutions to the political morass that prevents our cities, states and nation from being truly democratic. Some have already been implemented in more enlightened times with several subsequently watered down or eliminated. Others have never been allowed to see daylight.

The greatest solution is the elimination of the corruption inherent in our system; to actually eradicate the flagrant conflict of interest that rules our government. Politics has always been a competitive game with self interest dominant. This does not bode well for democracy nor public well being. But there are always those who persist, at times able to move in a positive direction. Despite the chaos, there is hope.

With a population being constantly diverted from the truth and set upon each other, the first problem is how to build a large enough majority to actually grasp relevant concepts. Once a voting majority is achieved, here are a few of the items that must be addressed to allow America to move forward as a democracy in the 21st century and beyond.

Bring back and expand the Fairness Doctrine

It is vital if we are to survive as a nation to bring back and enhance the Fairness Doctrine. It is absolutely necessary to separate opinion from fact with strict definitions. Varying opinions must have equal time and fact proven and distinct.

Truth must be clearly distinguished from the fiction that generates the divisiveness we suffer today.

The Electoral College must go

The Constitution was written in the 18th century with the foresight to amend it as needed.

Written into the Constitution to pacify smaller states, the greatest lesson learned from the Electoral College is that it is destructive to democracy!

The 21st century has seen two Presidents elected with catastrophic results; both receiving a minority of the electorate. The first created global political and economic disaster; the other, extreme divisiveness and total chaos. Isn’t this a signal to rid ourselves of the Electoral College? Making sense with 18th century thought, it’s undermining our system of democratic decision making.

The Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution allowed for the direct election of senators in 1913 altering the Constitution that had delegated appointment by state governments; a step in furthering our democratic principles.

Isn’t it time to continue moving in that direction?

We’re far beyond muskets

Another amendment that requires redefining is the second that allows for the possession of arms. It made a lot of sense when much of the country was frontier and many had to protect themselves and their neighbors with one shot muskets.

But now?

Congress is capable of placing limitations but many have been cut back or stifled. Isn’t it obvious why Americans have the highest murder rate in the industrial world?

Equality of representation

Gerrymandering, the creation of voting districts for political gain, was always a power play disenfranchising large numbers of voters. Yet it still prevails. Recognized widely as undemocratic, attempts at correction have been simply tokenism and often ignored.

Political patronage

Criminal behavior inherent within our political system corrupts in just about every political venue. A throwback to our primitive roots allows for despotic control by those who can claw their way up to the top levels of the power structure.

Once there, they have great control over elections, jobs and budgets. Their power and influence permeate every level and agency of government. Conflict of interest; illegal yet dominant.  In effect, this is the most dangerous threat to democracy.

Investigations can follow the relatively transparent trail of favors provided and debts paid, controlling decisions that work for the few against the many; a system that defies the rule of law! If people are aware and stand together, this can be eliminated. The laws exist; they require enforcement.

As in primitive societies however, power is only overtaken by greater power. If voters have the foresight to see that we have more in common than divides and work together, the power can shift. The rule of law can prevail.

We’ve created a structure for democracy governed by the rule of law. The reality is far removed!

Financial control

The fact that major corporations control issues is certainly the root of all evil. Controlling prices and influencing legislation that harm the public, they have historically had the greatest influence on policy.

During that brief period of enlightenment from Franklin D Roosevelt in 1933, tapering off in the 1970’s after the election of Richard Nixon, legislation was passed regulating businesses, making things more equitable for the public. Determined that this was hurting revenues, many regulations were eliminated with others diminished, creating a free for all for profits with costs up and safety compromised.

Allowing corporations the freedom to regulate themselves, we’ve seen planes fall out of the sky, people poisoned by tainted foods, climate out of control, the highest murder rate in the industrial world; as the ultra rich become progressively richer and quality of life plummets for the rest.

Control by money is ultimately the destructive force against a true democracy. It is what motivates the political bosses. It is what buys the power to manipulate the public by side tracking, altering and denying the truth. It dominates our political system.

Attempts to pass realistic laws reining in campaign donations have been thwarted. If government truly serves its citizens, government cannot be purchased by interest groups. Strict campaign regulation is vital!

Superficial Attempts

Many frustrated citizens vote against their interests, choosing a friendly image  manipulating them to focus on issues irrelevant or destructive to their well being.

Rather than provide complete information to the public, attempts at solutions tend to be compromised and often superficial; bandages covering wounds that continue to fester and grow beneath.

Ultimate solution

First, money must be eliminated from the equation!

Knowledge is vital. For our votes to have meaning we must know the issues and candidates.

In the end, the solution; the ultimate cure all; is that rather than allow ourselves to be divided by idols and lies, we must all be armed with the truth and work together for common good.

We must be able to communicate with each other! Rather than use the internet to divide, we must establish standards for presentation of reality vs. fiction. People of all ethnic and socio-economic groups must work together in independent groups to discuss their concerns, their fears, their aspirations with each other without interference from self serving businesses or politicians.

We must understand each other for, in essence, our needs are the same. We all want to raise our families in comfort and safety. We want our government to respond to our needs rather than compromise us placing profits above our quality of life.

The ultimate solution is a universal politics of reason; taking responsibility for assuring the needs of people and planet, applied throughout one global society, inclusive of all individuals.

With a world divided, our nation in chaos and forces within each individual working against it, this is truly the most difficult concept to achieve.

Until we are capable of understanding that serving society is serving the individual, this is the impossible dream.

But we are capable of restoring past progress and turning back in the right direction!
